CARE is on high alert in Vanuatu as Tropical Cyclone Pam tracks towards the capital of Port Vila, with strong winds already being felt across the nation’s northern islands.
Tropical Cyclone Pam is currently a Category Four system and is expected to make landfall near Port Vila on Friday morning, local time.
Projections show that Tropical Cyclone Pam may strengthen to a Category Five cyclone, which could see extremely damaging wind gusts of more than 280 kilometres per hour, heavy rainfall and flash flooding.
CARE is closely monitoring the situation alongside local authorities and is pre-positioning relief supplies for distribution to potentially affected communities.
CARE Australia will provide updates as they become available.
CARE has worked in Vanuatu since 2008, focussing on building resilience to disasters and climate change shocks, and increasing women and girls’ involvement in community leadership.
