Julia Newton-Howes: Why women and girls matter

“It’s still too easy to make gender equality merely an ‘add on’ to [aid] programs,” says CARE Australia CEO Dr Julia Newton-Howes. Here, she outlines three approaches that have enabled change in some of the world’s poorest communities.

But for local staff, cleaning up after the disaster doesn’t stop once they clock off work – many, like Ba Provincial Council Conservation Officer Sophy Buinimasi, have had their houses damaged and are worried for loved ones. In struggling communities around the world, the burden of collecting water often falls to women and girls, meaning they miss out on work or school. But thanks to funds raised through the Walk in Her Shoes challenge, clean water close to home is helping to change this.
