A stand-alone goal, so she doesn't have to
UPDATE – Thanks to our supporters, our petition to seek a stand-alone Sustainable Development Goal on gender equality and gained 1,212 signatures!
On August 3rd, a historic Sustainable Development Agenda was released, which signals hope and justice for women and men, boys and girls around the globe.
Following three years of global meetings CARE applauds that the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), are to be formally adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in September. These include stand-alone goals on gender equality, a commitment to reproductive rights and ending hunger and malnutrition.
Right now, governments are discussing the 17 goals that could transform the world by 2030. The countdown to September’s summit on the SDGs is on.
The SDGs are a new, universal set of targets that United Nations member states will use to frame their agendas and political policies over the next 15 years. They follow on from the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), that were agreed upon by governments in 2000, and are due to expire at the end of this year.
Our work has shown that the most effective way of fighting poverty is through programs that target women and girls. A gender equality goal with clear targets on health, reproductive rights, education, political participation, access to finance and jobs is needed to end poverty for all.
So from girls like Anusha – Thank you!
