There are many factors working against farmers in the West Bank: complex security arrangements, ongoing conflict, environmental fluctuations and import restrictions make it difficult for farmers to harvest their crops and grow their businesses.
With the support of the Australian Government, CARE is seeking to improve the livelihoods of farmers in the region by improving their access to markets and connecting large investment companies to enterprises in need of support.
For example, CARE has expanded the market for dairy farmers by supporting an existing community-led milk collection unit, which sells milk in bulk so that producers can get a better price.
A seed bank, established by CARE in 2006 to increase access to better seed varieties, has grown into a large enterprise, supporting more than 2,500 farmers, and is now linked to major supply chains with local and exporting companies.
This growth has been made possible thanks to CARE managing relations between small-scale farmers, community cooperatives and national companies.
