Cyclone Fani
Cyclone Fani, a Category 4, and one of the worst tropical cyclones in 20 years, is leaving a trail of destruction across India as it heads towards Bangladesh, devastating vulnerable communities in its path. Buildings are damaged, communications are disrupted, and roads are flooded.
Making landfall on the Odisha coast of India on Friday 3 May, the 200km per hour winds have already forced the evacuation of more than one million people. Tens of millions more remain in the potential path of the cyclone, including one million Rohingya refugees in the world’s most dense refugee settlement in Bangladesh. Living in flimsy shelters and densely packed into exposed areas, this severe storm could cause tremendous damage and loss of life.
Families are in urgent need of shelter, food, water and medical supplies. CARE is on the ground in both India and Bangladesh and is already preparing a full scale response.
